At the heart of any solar energy systems lies the solar panel or PV (Photovoltaic) cell - It's the one
crucial component that actually makes the whole concept work! These panels feature semi-conductive
materials like silicon. When exposed to sunlight, the electrons throughout material are knocked loose
and begin to move rapidly - it is this rapid movement of electrons that creates electricity through a
process known as the "Photovoltaic Effect".
Now the electricity generated by the solar panels is of the DC type which makes it unsuitable for
powering most appliances. Thus it has to be routed into a inverter device which converts it into
the suitable AC current which is then connected to the utility panel in homes or business for load
distribution.
To make the system more practical, a deep cycle solar battery is used to store excess power for later
use whenever sunlight isn't simply available which is obviously the case during night or during adverse
weather conditions. An energy system can also be designed to draw power from the local power grid as
needed or transmit excess energy to it when the battery has reached its full capacity earning a credit or
income through a process called net metering.
Now that's basically how a solar energy system works in a nutshell. Would you like to know more or do
